Drinking red wine gives longer lives to . . .mice. And likely people. According to a new study at Harvard Medical School there is now "conclusive evidence" that the red wine compound resveratrol directly activates a protein that promotes health in animals. The research showed that mice on resveratrol have twice the endurance and are relatively immune to effects of obesity and aging. Scientists have focused for the past decade on sirtuins, a group of genes that are believed to protect mammals against disease and aging. And evidence has been mounting that resveratrol increases the activity of a specific sirtuin, SIRT1. Some scientists contended the findings were flawed. This latest research, however, uncovered the molecular mechanism for the interaction. In addition to red wine, resveratrol is found in peanuts and berries, which are not as much fun and can stick to your teeth.
